SWK 2250 Introduction to Community Practice

Student participation in a pre-practicum in a local social welfare agency setting which includes a minimum of 60 hours of experience. In this orientation course student learn about the work of the agency in the community and have the opportunity to learn first-hand about working with different kinds of people. A one-hour classroom weekly seminar accompanies this experience in the community. The integrating seminar will emphasize the partnership of practice and knowledge and promote the development of a professional identity. Students are introduced to self-awareness and reflection as a part of professional development as well as issues of ethics and diversity. This course is designed to improve awareness of and strengthen commitment to social work through participation in the community. Arrangements with the agency must be made the preceding semester. This course should not be taken later than fall of the junior year.
