Master of Arts African American Worship Studies

AAWS General Description

The Master of Arts in African American Worship Studies is designed to train and equip young men and women in the African American community as worship practitioners. Robust contextual, theological, worship, and leadership training provide a platform for students to engage in an equipping process whereby skills needed for congregational shepherding and healthy leadership in the African American church are discovered, combined, nurtured and enriched.

The degree features a complete and balanced educational experience in worship, including: worship in the old and new testament; history, theology and practical application of worship; spiritual formation; and contemporary issues in worship.

The degree also features a complete and equally balanced educational experience in understanding the distinctives of the African-American church and how leadership and imagination are best utilized and executed in this context.

AAWS Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Arts in African American Worship Studies should be able to:

  1. Articulate a worship philosophy of ministry strategy for the African American Worshiping community based on biblical, theological, foundations of worship.
  2. Synthesize principles of critical contextualization applicable to current issues confronting worship leaders in the African American tradition.
  3. Develop literature and research methodologies applicable to worship professionals in the African American Worship Traditions.
