Department of Social Justice General Information
Mission Statement
The Department of Social Justice offers an interdisciplinary, Biblically based, program leading to two Bachelor of Science majors: (a) Nonprofit Administration and Social Entrepreneurship; and (b) Civic Engagement and Restorative Justice. Students will develop critical analysis and creative solutions when addressing social problems through insights from the fields of biblical justice, religion, social work, criminal justice, sociology, law, government, and business. Through a rich combination of theory, theology, and intensive field experiences, students will gain knowledge and practical skills to prepare them for a variety of careers. Nonprofit Administration and Social Entrepreneurship students will be prepared for leadership within social service nonprofits, public service, missions, and social enterprise settings. Civic Engagement and Restorative Justice students will be prepared to conduct research, policy analysis, advocacy, and lobbying within local, state, and federal government agencies. Students will focus on poverty alleviation and advancing individual, community, and global flourishing.
Student Learning Outcomes
Graduates with a Civic Engagement and Restorative Justice major will be able to:
- Understand Biblical Justice in the context of a presenting social injustice.
- Examine the cause and effect of significant patterns and themes that contribute to injustice.
- Learn effective strategies to alleviate individual, community, and global poverty.
- Create a comprehensive action plan to address a contemporary social justice issue.
- Advance human flourishing at the individual, community, and global level.
- Be prepared for placement in a graduate program.
Graduates with a Nonprofit Administration and Social Entrepreneurship major will be able to:
- Understand Biblical Justice in the context of a presenting social injustice.
- Learn effective strategies to alleviate individual, community and global poverty.
- Develop a comprehensive action plan and creative solutions towards poverty alleviation.
- Advance human flourishing at the individual, community, and global level.
- Learn effective strategies to assist in developing a business and/or non-profit plan.
- Demonstrate competencies in assessment and development of healthy communities.
- Be prepared for placement in a graduate program.
