Manner and Method of Dissent

Trevecca Nazarene University believes in the importance of freedom of expression and in the value of permitting all members of the university community to publicly express support for or opposition to actions and issues.  While recognizing this, the university also recognizes an obligation to maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic work and the respect of individuals to pursue their personal goals.  Therefore the following guidelines govern student protests and demonstrations:

  • On-campus groups wishing to demonstrate on the TNU campus must submit their plans and have their plans approved by the Center for Student Development 24 hours in advance of the demonstration.
  • Plans submitted to the Center for Student Development should include the number of people involved, location, time, and purpose of the demonstration.
  • All protests and demonstrations should be peaceful and respectful.
  • Sponsoring organizations, their officers, and all individual participants, will be held responsible for their conduct in demonstrations and protests.
  • Student demonstrations are to be conducted in an orderly manner, and are not to interfere with the normal operations of the university.
  • The privilege of on-campus student demonstrations is not extended to organizations or students not directly affiliated with Trevecca Nazarene University.

The Center for Student Development has the right to discontinue any protests or demonstrations not in compliance with these guidelines.  Off-campus protestors involved in an approved protest or demonstration may be asked to leave the campus.
